Expiring keys

Time-limited and trial license keys

A key does not have to last forever. Give it an end date, or a number of days that starts when the customer first uses it.

Three ways a key can end

  • Never — it works until you revoke it.
  • On a fixed date — the same moment wherever the key is used.
  • N days after the first activation — set it per key, or as a default for every key of a product.

Trials that start when the customer does

With “N days after activation”, a key that sits unused does not lose any time. A 14-day trial key handed out today gives the customer their full 14 days, whether they start next week or next month.

Reminders your customer actually gets

If you add the customer’s e-mail address to the key, they receive the key straight away, a reminder two days before it expires and a notice when it has expired — once each. You can switch these e-mails off.

Extending or renewing a key

Change the end date in the dashboard or through the API. The customer keeps the same key and nothing needs re-activating — the next check simply sees the new date.

What your app sees

Once the end date passes, the license API answers valid: false with the reason expired — signed, like every answer — and the SDK’s offline cache cannot keep the app running past the key’s own expiry. Create a 14-day trial key from a script:

curl -X POST https://license.foliox.sbs/api/automation/v1/keys \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LICENSE_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"product":"YOUR_PRODUCT_ID","durationDays":14,"customerEmail":"[email protected]"}'
FAQ

Common questions

Can a customer reset the clock by reinstalling?

No. Expiry is decided on the server, so reinstalling the app or changing the computer’s date does not give back any time.

Can I turn a trial key into a full licence?

Yes — extend it, or remove its end date, in the dashboard. The customer keeps the same key.
