Public keys

Public license keys: one key, many users

Most keys should belong to one customer on one computer. Sometimes you want the opposite — one key that anyone can use. That is what a public key is for.

When one key for many people makes sense

  • Beta and early-access builds — hand one key to every tester.
  • Team, classroom or site licences — one key for everyone in the group.
  • A free tier you can still switch off — ship the key with the free version and revoke it the day you change your mind.
  • Giveaways and events — one key that stops working on a date you choose.

Device-locked vs public keys

Device-locked key (default)Public key
DevicesOne per key on Free; up to 3, 5 or 15 on Starter, Pro and BusinessMany at the same time: up to 10 on Free, 100 on Starter, 1,000 on Pro, no limit on Business
Another computer tries itRefused (hwid_mismatch)Accepted
Signed answersYes — the same Ed25519-signed answers, the same SDKs
Expiry and revocationThe same: a fixed date or “N days after the first activation”; revoking stops it everywhere at once
Device resetsCustomers request one, you approve itNot needed — nothing is bound
BlocklistA banned device or address is refused either way
Rate limitsPer address and per keyPer address only — many users on one key is expected

Create a public key

In your dashboard open Keys → Generate keys and switch on Public key. Or create one from a script with the automation API:

curl -X POST https://license.foliox.sbs/api/automation/v1/keys \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LICENSE_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"product":"YOUR_PRODUCT_ID","keyType":"public","durationDays":30}'

Your app does not change: the SDK’s check(key) works the same for both kinds of key.

Turn it off for everyone at once

Revoke the key in the dashboard and every copy stops working the next time it checks in. Or give it an end date when you create it, and it expires on its own. The key’s detail panel shows how many devices and addresses used it in the last 30 days.

Keep selling per-customer keys

Anyone who sees a public key can use it — treat it like a coupon, not a personal licence. For anything you sell per customer, use normal device-locked keys. See how device locking works.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a public key still signed?

Yes. Every answer is signed with Ed25519 exactly as for a device-locked key, so it cannot be faked by a local server.

Does a public key count as one key on my plan?

Yes — however many people use it, it is one key towards your plan’s limits. License checks are never metered.

Can a customer request a device reset for it?

No, and they never need to: a public key is not bound to any device.

Are public keys on the Free plan?

Yes, on every plan. On Free a public key can be used by up to 10 devices, on Starter 100, on Pro 1,000 and on Business without a limit. Devices already using a key are never cut off.
